Paul Katz

Professor at University of Massachusetts Amherst

Paul S. Katz is a Professor of Biology and Director of the Initiative on Neurosciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.1 He moved to UMass in 2017 after spending 20 years at Georgia State University.1 Katz's research focuses on understanding how neuronal circuits operate, using sea slugs (nudibranchs) as model organisms due to their relatively simple brains and behaviors.2

At UMass, Katz has shifted his lab's focus from studying swim circuits of nudibranchs to examining the entire nervous system of Berghia.1 He leads projects such as a connectome study in collaboration with Harvard University and investigations into neurogenesis.1

Katz is known for his work in neuroscience, particularly in studying neural mechanisms of behavior and the evolution of neural circuits.2 Outside of his scientific pursuits, he enjoys improv and outdoor activities like hiking, biking, and skiing.1
