I recently had the opportunity to visit Cuba, where I met many entrepreneurs that are working hard to create a real private sector on the island. During my visit, it became abundantly clear that the greatest barrier to economic growth and prosperity in Cuba lies not external factors, but in the domestic economic policies imposed by its own government. The labyrinth of regulations at every level of Cuban life is staggering. In the private sector, the Cuban government makes even the simplest tasks, like paying for things, unnecessarily complicated. I could go on and on about all the ridiculous things I saw and heard. Cubans like to say, "No es fácil" (It's not easy), and indeed it is not, and it never will be for as long as the Cuban government continues to enact regulations that do little else but get in the way of the prosperity and happiness of its people. Because of this, I believe that the endless debate about Cuba policy should focus less on the embargo – it is not the problem – and more on the real problem: the Cuban government’s overregulation and refusal to permit the growth of a truly free and prosperous private sector. Discerning between those entrepreneurs that are truly independent and those that are compromised by a connection to the Cuban state is not easy (of course, because nothing is easy in Cuba!). Nevertheless, US regulations should be directed at identifying those entrepreneurs in Cuba that can be helped, and then, to help them. It is in the nature of a Cuban to be entrepreneurial. It is time for the Cuban government to embrace the inherent nature of its people and pave the way for a brighter, more prosperous future. Indeed, it is time for Cuba to set its people free and US policy should do everything possible to make this happen.

For decades, Miami real estate has been a top choice for Latin American and European investors. To ensure continued success, key considerations must be analyzed to align investment strategies with U.S. and home country regulations.
