Highlights
I want to thank @Curt (Kip) Schibli for inviting me to speak at the Ridgefield Rotary meeting last night about Communication. I enjoyed chatting with members about their communication challenges and experiences, both professional and personal.
My talk highlighted role non-verbal communication plays in both personal and professional relationships. Only 7% of a message is your words, therefore remember to focus on the other 93%, vocal and non-verbal communication. I also discussed the difference between hearing, listening and active listening and how being an active listener can change the trajectory of a conversation.
Thank you also to Ken Wipperman, the current president and Shirely VanDam, who was the lucky winner of my book, Navigating Special Education: The Power of Building Positive Parent-Educator Partnerships.
Did you know about 75% of speakers experience anxiety before "taking the stage," and feel relief when they finish speaking?
Feeling nervous is normal. The term performance anxiety is used to describe these feelings. Are you concerned the audience won't like what you are saying? Is your nervousness related to a fear of rejection or failure?
Let your anxiety work in your favor. You are anxious because you care. Reframing your anxiety can change your perspective.
Be prepared; it will build your confidence. Remember to speak slowly, clearly, and with passion and conviction.
Give yourself a pep-talk. Think positive thoughts and remind yourself about past successes! It will help reduce your anxiety!
Did you know people often feel great relief when they finish their presentation? Yet, relief is a positive emotion that occurs when something unpleasant or painful ends. I hope your talk wasn't unpleasant or painful.
Therefore, instead of feeling relief, feel a sense of pride and accomplishment.
To ensure your audience remembers what you said... ** Summarize the main points of your talk ** Restate the purpose ** Create a closure or 'call to action' statement.
Next time you feel nervous before giving a presentation, tell yourself you have the power to transform your anxiety into a boost for your performance. Prepare, practice, self-talk, and visualize your success!
Take these steps and watch your confidence grow! #Publicspeaking #presentations #communication #speakingsuccess
