For #Alzheimer's & Brain Awareness Month, I want to call attention to the burden that Dementia causes and the gaps in our care system that leave patients and their families struggling to access basic care.

  • The cost of #Dementia care is nearly $400B annually, and growing rapidly
  • Diagnosis can take up to two years (+decades from when the body started to change) -- many patients are clinical trial ineligible once they are diagnosed
  • 90% of patients never see a specialist, most PCPs feel underprepared
  • studies vary, but almost 50% never even get a diagnosis
  • The number of people living with #dementia and the number of treatments are expected to grow rapidly in the coming years, adding substantial complexity to diagnostics and treatment planning.

Like other aging related #neurodegenerativediseases, the burden of care often falls on spouses or adult children of the person living with Dementia. Those family members (or friends) carry binders of paperwork and records between medical visits looking for the best care for their loved ones. We can do better, from democratizing specialist access and treatment planning early, to access to research, to novel caregiver support programs like #GUIDE.

It all starts upfront with early diagnosis and care planning. Solving this journey is core to our practice of medicine, and why Access was the first issue we solved for. Find out more about journey (https://lnkd.in/g2SZN98h). If you or a loved one are in need of Specialists care, we'd love to help at Synapticure Inc.

It's amazing to look back at what we've built Synapticure Inc. in a few short years -- from a 96 NPS from patients to the partnerships we have established to the Gold Start Certification for quality from the Joint Commission to being a 50 State Established #GUIDE entity with care delivery across #neurodegenerative diseases.

The original idea was simply care coordination and wrap around services, enabling current providers to see more patients while providing support to patients at home, genetic testing and access to research / trials. The problems became acutely obvious early -- providers, in particular specialists, were so overtaxed in the current system that it was creating massive wait times, usage of emergency care or multi-month waits for basic approvals with insurance, and often the barriers to access ended up excluding patients from speciality care and trials entirely as a result. In early discovery we were sometimes adding work for the providers in order to enable ongoing patient care -- something unsustainable for neurologist who are already working easily 60+ hours a week with limited support.

To solve this, we set out to build a 50 state practice of medicine, staffed by our own specialists neurologists with genetic counseling, mental health, PT / OT, SLT and more, and powered by this same care coordination staff. A lightweight, virtual first multi-state licensed entity allows for balancing of resources, and well designed backend support and technology, creates a model that can see patients in days with 24/7 support. The specialists relationship was key to advancing better care for patients, but the day-to-day powerhouse of our company is still that care coordination engine that work in coordination with local care teams and our virtual staff. Importantly, because we're virtual, we do not compete with brick and mortar partners, often instead helping retention with those clinics.

This investment is why I believe our model is uniquely set up to drive better outcomes for patients, to support PCPs and Neurologists in caring for patients with neurodegenerative diseases like #Alzheimer's, #Parkinson's and #ALS, and I'm sure is why we were fortunate enough to be an Established CMS GUIDE participant in all 50 States for those living with Dementia. From pre-symptomatic, to diagnosis and testing, to ongoing care, finding clinical trials, and more, we are there to help.

To find out more about our GUIDE program, take a look at the link below. There are a lot of great programs based on need for different patient populations and provider groups, but what we've built really is special.
