Building open-source software to improve global health for the world's underserved communities

Philip Su is a seasoned technology leader, entrepreneur, and educator with a diverse career spanning major tech companies, nonprofit leadership, and unique personal experiences. He is the founder and former CEO of Audere, a global health software nonprofit funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which focused on improving rapid testing in low-income countries. Su led Audere from 2018 to 2021, after which he transitioned to other ventures.135

Before founding Audere, Su held prominent roles in the tech industry. He worked at Microsoft for over 17 years, where he managed development teams and contributed to projects like Tablet PC and Live Search. At Facebook (now Meta), he served as the Director of the London engineering office, helping establish and grow its first engineering hub outside the U.S., while also contributing to projects like Facebook Video Calling and Oculus VR.35

In addition to his corporate career, Su explored unconventional paths, such as working briefly as an Amazon warehouse associate in 2021. This experience inspired his podcast "Peak Salvation," where he reflected on labor conditions and societal impacts of automation.13

Currently, Su is an engineer at OpenAI, having joined in August 2023. He is also a part-time faculty member at the University of Washington, teaching computer science courses.245
