As we enter the 2nd month of Aussie Autumn (Apr 2023), these cooler days and rainy spells have me looking at my weather apps on my phone & laptop more frequently.

As a tech gadget lover - I’m also asking Ziggy (my chosen name for the Alexa device in my home office) “what time will it stop raining, or what’s the weather for my drive to work” On super rainy days, I will take the train vs risking longer than usual traffic delays.

A colleague on our IBM Slack channel shared an interesting post about IBMs acquisition of The Weather Company back in 2015/2016.

It’s a 8-10 min read about the history of the acquisition, various public and crowd sourced channels of weather data, and the business cases for various users of weather data (from Utility companies, to Aviation (flight crews and ground operations); to emergency services (positioning crews in anticipation of extreme weather).

Our recent (April 2023) Cat 5 Cyclone in Western Australia (Cyclone Ilsa peaked with wind speeds around 289 KPH (179 MPH) comes to mind ).

Early preparation for the many mining and drilling operations, base camps and neighbouring Pilbara region towns, and bringing in extra emergency services personnel helped to minimise the impact of that massive cyclone!

Enjoy the read!
