Highlights

July 2014, I made my way from Chennai to Bengaluru, starting my first full time job as a software engineer. I only had competitive programming skills on C/C++ at the time, I couldn't even start a Java application using an IDE because I'd only ever javac and java'ed it before. I thought I'd stay on the job for 2 years, then make my way, as most of my friends and seniors from university did, back to grad school for a masters degree. (Narrator: he didn't.)

Looking back, dopamine pathways have changed a lot and the mind has gotten used to accepting delayed gratification much better than before. An old habit that has stuck with me throughout is the urge to avoid writing code. Have to say that it has served me well. A new habit that's helpful, is to grudgingly accept that however smart I feel in the moment, hindsight will humble me.

It would be a shame to not acknowledge the privilege of mobility, autonomy and financial security that this field of work has given me. I chanced upon being a software engineer and I'm eternally thankful for the randomness that nudged me there.

10 down, more to go!
