About a year ago, my colleauges Rebecca Doherty, Claudia Kampel, Anna Koivuniemi, Lucy Perez and Werner Rehm went on a journey to understand what drives outperformance of companies that engage in ESG initiatives, once you correct for basic operating performance.
They found that financially successful companies that integrate ESG priorities into their growth strategies can significantly outperform their peers (as measured by excess return to shareholders) - but only if they also outperform on the fundamentals of return on capital and "peer like growth". This message is clear: not only can you do well while doing good—you can do better.
However, the reverse is also true - ESG is not a panacea—it won’t save an underperformer with a flawed strategy and will not rescue you if your company has more fundamental issues. You need will to attack growth, margins, and ESG if you are in the group that needs to catch up.
One way to do this is to really understand customer segments. We live in a world where even commodities move from "all are the same" to product segments of "low carbon" and "high carbon". Are you close enough to your customers to craft a strategy that will make you a tripple outperformer by addressing real customer needs?
