This week, I had the honor of joining ~1000 of other sales enablement professionals at the #seismicshift23 conference, and to celebrate with our Marketing team who took home the Buyer Experience Boss award for creative programs (amazing). It was a joy to share the stage with Seismic's CEO Doug Winter and talk a little bit about what sales enablement means to us here at IBM. It was fun to be back on stage, and even more fun to chat in the sessions and around the event and see just how far our profession has come, how much opportunity we have to drive change, and how innovative and driven Enablers are. Thank you to all who shared successes and challenges – as my colleague and mentor Sharon Driscoll said well: when we share, even with those who can be seen as “competitors,” we all win - it’s a brother(sister?)hood.

With that in mind – the three take-aways from my talk with Doug who asked, “What’s your advice to Enablement professionals who want to drive change in their companies:”

Be curious. Learn something new, every day. Look for inspiration inside and outside of your workplace. Our field crosses many different areas: from adult learning, change management, communications and employee engagement, data science and operations, sales methodology and of course about what your team brings to the market.

Be consultative. From order taker to order maker – the best enablement professionals help shape the how and the wow.  Where does your sales team have an opportunity to drive growth? The answer won’t come to you fully baked; your advice and counsel is appreciated. As Henry Ford is quoted saying, “if I asked people what they wanted, they would have said a faster horse.” We are asked for faster horses all the time. Help your team explore new and different ways to solve the problem: modular content, AI-driven solutions, coaching and mentoring, peer-led programs ... we have great tools in the enablers’ kit. And of course: outcomes matter, and the KPIs will tell you if you're on the right track.

Be daring. I'm regularly inspired by Bill Higgins who recently shared a story about John Chambers who was complemented on his success with unicorns. His reaction? Perhaps a great batting average means I'm not taking enough risk. No one likes failure, but without it, how will you know if you’re growing? Sticking with the analogy: you’ll never hit a home run if you don’t swing for the fences. And yes, you might still win the game with enough solid hits that get your runners on base. It’s a blend. Pick your moments – but when big growth is on the line, be willing to take a risk and swing for the fences – the reward might just exceed even your own expectations.

Those are my three. What are yours?

My team inspires me on the regular; it was great to spend the last few days with a few of them, special shout-out to Mark Taggart 🌤 He/Him Chris Eaton Maria Hernandorena-Santalo Kurt Rivard Sharon Driscoll Ray Oram
