Marauder is closing (for a week).
That’s right, we’re shutting everything down. Next week through Labor Day, for a total of 10 days, Marauder’s office will be officially closed. No emails, no calls, no kidding. And all will be OK while we’re gone.
But why should anyone care that we’re taking a coordinated vacation (not together, mind you, unless everyone else is doing something together and I wasn’t invited)?
We’re a small staff that puts a lot of personal energy into each of our projects. The things that make our work so enjoyable and productive require intense focus, time, and presence that, as we all know, is finite. Every job comes with its stresses though. It’s acknowledging this reality that has seen conversations around burnout become the norm.
Like many small businesses, Marauder has a discretionary paid time off policy. The pitfall of these policies, as plenty of research shows, is that less time is taken off rather than more. As a result, we recently modified our policy to encourage each person to take a minimum of 15 days off per year. Quarterly check-ins are used to make sure these are actually planned and used. This is in addition to federal holidays and whatever happens during the last week of the calendar year.
Even with those changes, the reality of the situation is that one person’s time off means the workload shifts to someone else. Or, exacerbating the issue, it’s waiting for the person when they return from vacation. The thinking here in shutting our whole operation down is that if we’re all out of the office, and all of our clients know we will be out of the office, then there's no work to shuffle. At least for a week.
I love that I get to do what I do for a living. Absolutely love it. But we all need time to recharge, to unplug, to… do something that doesn’t have an electronic equivalent. If a company of our size, with a small but mighty staff constantly doing more than anyone would expect from us, can figure out how to step away for a bit then perhaps this post will encourage others to follow suit.
