Today morning when I checked my FB feed, I learnt of the demise of the husband of a lady I follow on FB for her mandala paintings and items ( https://lnkd.in/d-V_HuP ). Her posts have always been full of energy, enthusiasm and love for her art and occasionally with pics of her young daughter.. When she posts her pics, her lovely smile is the first thing one notices..But her post today was a stark reminder of how Covid has devastated India.
A few days ago, a friend mentioned that her 36 year old cousin, a father of 5 year old twins had passed away due to heartattack couple of months ago. He had recovered from Covid earlier...and his death is attributed to a heart attack.
Last month, we heard that the husband of one of our younger cousin passed away. Their child is less than 2.
Elsewhere, I have come across posts where women, recently widowed are trying to get back to work to support the family.
It's not over yet. Checking my whatsapp college group later in the day, I learnt that a batchmate of mine, again, father of 6 yr old and infant twins ..waits for a miracle...or rather his family does..after he had multiple organ failures yesterday followed by three surgeries in last few weeks. I dread checking my whatsapp college group again... And this isn't the first of these. But following the news of his near recovery before things took turn for the worse has shaken us all.
I only mention the cases where men in 30s are leaving behind young children but I know it's the whole spectrum..however, as my friend put it..the demise of her 36 year old cousin hurt her even more than losing her mom to cancer few years ago.
Official estimates put the covid deaths in India at 300k+ deaths. However, unofficial estimates are close to 10 million death. It is not inconceivable..considering that number of villages in India are 660,000 and with 8000 towns and 4000 cities. Given that crematoriums ran out of capacity, is an average of 10-20 deaths per village during the second wave, so hard to believe? A simple Fermi estimation exercise while triangulating data from similar countries/or even developed countries with more transparent reporting with the less infectious/deadly covid variants will suggest 10 million to be a realistic scenario estimate...not even the worst case one.
Corporate India...now we need skill development and job creation even more than ever. Returnship programs for women, rebuilding our heathcare infrastructure and increased investments in healthcare professionals' development as well as research, better housing for migrants and continued or even more remote working opportunities so people can have better work-family life balance need to become the reality rather than nice to have, brand building initiatives. I am sure there's a lot more that can be done..and we need the corporate leaders, and not political ones to lead this vision. We obviously cannot depend on the government (regardless of which party is in power) to make this happen.
