As the Olympics competition intensifies in Paris, let's take a moment to appreciate the fascinating story of Waldi, the very first official Olympic mascot.

Designed by Elena Winschermann for the 1972 Summer Olympics, Waldi, a Dachshund, embodied the essential qualities of athletes: endurance, tenacity, and agility. Modelled after the real-life Dachshund Cherie von Birkenhof, Waldi proudly showcased at least 3 of the 6 Olympic colours (red & black being removed due to connotations with the Nazi regime).

Not just a symbol, Waldi left a lasting impression on the 1972 Olympics. The marathon route in Munich was ingeniously shaped like him, with runners commencing their race from the back of Waldi's neck and circling counter clockwise.

The adorable Waldi became a global sensation, with over 2 million items sold worldwide. This triumph marked the beginning of a tradition, as every subsequent Olympic Games has included a mascot.

And here's a fun fact: the term 'mascot' finds its roots in the French word 'mascotte,' meaning a lucky charm.

Waldi truly embodied the spirit of the games as a beloved symbol of unity and sportsmanship.

With the 2024 Paris Olympics approaching, it's remarkable to see the strides being made towards gender parity in sports. Europe Magazine shared a powerful visual highlighting this historic moment where equal representation across all athletes will be achieved for the first time.

In stark contrast to the 1900 Games in Paris, where women made up only 2.2% of participants, the progress towards equality is evident. It's astonishing to note that women were only permitted to compete in the marathon as recently as 1984. Since 1991, any new sport aspiring to be part of the Olympic program must include women's competitions.

As organizations focus on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, it's crucial to reflect on gender parity in the corporate world. According to a McKinsey & Company report (Women in the Workplace 2023), only 28% of Senior VP & C-Suite Roles were held by women, with just 6% being women of colour, showcasing a 6% increase since 2018.
