Chinese government-backed hackers have penetrated deep into U.S. internet service providers in recent months to spy on their users, according to people familiar with the ongoing American response and private security researchers. The unusually aggressive and sophisticated attacks include access to at least two major providers with millions of customers as well as to several smaller providers, people familiar with the separate campaigns said. “It is business as usual now for China, but that is dramatically stepped up from where it used to be. It is an order of magnitude worse,” said Brandon Wales, who until earlier this month was executive director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, CISA. The More Things Change: The Necessity for Thinking like a Hacker, Thinking Critically, and ... Thinking
Thinking differently is easy to talk about but actually thinking differently is really hard. Yet conditions today suggest the future will not be what it used to be so we had better be thinking differently about it.
We need to think about security not only in the detailed specific ways which preoccupy professionals in the field, but at a meta-level. We need to think at a meta-level because the meta-level is thinking about us. The AIs do not care what we call them or how we characterize their similarities to or differences from human thinking or whether or not they surpass human thinking by some arbitrary metric. If the singularity is defined as an ineradicable symbiosis between our technologies and ourselves, it has already happened, not with a bang but with a whimper, incrementally and relentlessly. It is indifferent to our philosophical concerns. It just does its thing and does it again and does it more.
The Machine--the networks of networks of interactive nodes that look like multiple dimensions of a game of cat's cradle--hardware, software, what's the difference? They are all structures of information (cognitive artifacts) that tell us what to do and are unyielding in their dominance of and influence on our behavior. They are rigid taskmasters that brook no rebellion--unless it is hackers, genuine creatives who approach the system to see what it can be made to do, not what it was designed to do. The Machine thinks, acts, and creates on its own terms and presents unique challenges to its human partners because the complex thing we made is now remaking itself and with billions of lines of code,The Machine is impossible to grasp in its totality. It is bigger than we are and has already won. The battle between Skynet and humans is over.
If we do not meet the challenge of living with this Frankenstein monster and really thinking about how to think about it, the playing field will not only not be level, it will be tilted more and more in favor of the machine. Skynet does not need killer-robots if it can use soft power to take us over as easily as the Russians took Crimea. Skynet is playful and teases us but winds up owning us. Meanwhile we continue to think we're in control....
