UW PROFESSOR EMERITUS OF HISORY (SOUTH ASIA)

Robert Eric Frykenberg is a distinguished Professor Emeritus of History and South Asian Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Born in 1930 and raised in India, he received his Ph.D. from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London in 1961.1 Frykenberg joined the University of Wisconsin in 1962, where he made significant contributions to the field of South Asian studies.1

Throughout his career, Frykenberg:

Frykenberg's research focuses on the history of India, particularly on topics such as:

He has authored numerous books and articles, including "Christianity in India: From Beginnings to the Present" (2008) and "India's History, India's Raj: Essays in Historical Understanding" (2023).12

Frykenberg's expertise extends to the history of Thomas Christians in India, and he has contributed to discussions on the establishment of Christianity in the region.23
