Highlights
Exciting discussions at Reuters Hydrogen Summit on the green ammonia market.
We’re still not on the right trajectory to reach net zero and status quo is not an option. Much more must be done to transform the global energy system and bring down emissions. Green ammonia can play a pivotal role in this transformation.
By directly fueling vessels or power plants and serving as an energy carrier, green ammonia has the power to significantly reduce carbon emissions. It offers a cost-effective and lower-risk solution for energy-intensive industries and long-distance transportation, leveraging existing infrastructure and assets.
The green ammonia market is maturing rapidly. Technology is ready, global infrastructure is developing fast and regulatory policies are progressing. Collaboration across the supply chain is essential to mitigate investment risks and optimize efficiencies, and many projects have already been announced.
Despite the massive potential and positive developments, there are still barriers to overcome. Cost versus value uncertainty and the need for policies and financing to catch up are among the challenges. Clear, consistent and long-term commitments from governments are crucial to drive investment decisions in green energy technologies.
Topsoe is one of the few companies that has the full Power-to-X value proposition. We’re building one of the world’s first industrial-scale SOEC electrolyzer manufacturing facilities, which will help ramp up production of green hydrogen and subsequently green ammonia. We’ve partnered with First Ammonia and secured funding from the EU Innovation Fund to accelerate the scaling of this cutting-edge technology.
We’re fully committed to driving the energy transition and unlocking the tremendous potential of green ammonia.

One of highlights of 2023 for Topsoe was entering a joint venture with Sasol to develop, build, own and operate Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) ventures and market the products.
I’m excited to share that Jan Toschka will lead the venture as CEO for the new company. As an experienced leader in the aviation industry and coming from a position as President of Global Aviation for Shell, Jan holds unique competencies, which combined with his highly entrepreneurial mindset is exactly what we need to get the joint venture off to a great start.
There’s no time to waste in boosting production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel to decarbonize the aviation industry. With Jan joining, I’m confident that the joint venture will deliver a remarkable contribution to the world’s global ambition of reaching net zero.
Jan will assume his new role as CEO on 1 March. The joint venture will also be launched in March and be headquartered in The Netherlands.
