The next Michael Jordan? No, more like the first Caitlin Clark.

Her impact is beyond impressive - Clark's draw-dropping ratings impact detailed in this The Wall Street Journal article (4X YoY NCAA tournament ratings!!) and should continue with the WNBA.

While like MJ, Clark is providing optimism for the health of her new professional league and her endorsement brands while inspiring kids like my 11 year-old niece to "be like Caitlin", I think its especially interesting that media, fans and brands are also looking more broadly at the women's game and other stars. Consider details from a recent Front Office Sports piece:

🏀 Aces star Ajay Wilson is also getting a similar Nike sneaker deal to Caitlin's

🏀 WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association) broadcasts from major outlets like ESPN, ABC and Amazon Prime Video will carry games from major market teams in NY and Chicago

🏀 the league is optimistic about much bigger TV deals in the near future (to the tune of a 2x current numbers)

I don't know about you, but I'm along for the ride. It's so exciting to see (and hope) that this sustains and grows as Clark's career no doubtably will. Now...can we get an expansion team in Philly?

Innovation comes in many forms.

One of my favorites: merging product creation with beautiful design. We see it from emerging brand On to 25+ years of Apple devices. And now startup Jolie Skincare. In the form of...a showerhead.

As Inc. Magazine says, Jolie has "elevated an everyday item into iconic." Reminiscent of my former colleagues at Therabody, Jolie has done so many things right that savvy Marketers and Product leads should take note of:

  1. Jolie recognized that form can assist function as real category differentiators - both in form factor and end user benefits (hair growth?! better skin??).

  2. The team did their homework. That includes finding design inspiration beyond their category (a must to unlock new ideas).

  3. While a start up, Jolie built a smart business plan with a target audience they know well.

  4. Feature-benefits are clear and compelling (backed by science!) Coupled with stunning design, Marketing can use both emotive and rational storytelling to appeal to a wide swath of customers.

Innovation in design + feature set + customers benefits = a "status symbol" level product. Even in a shower product.
