China recently announced a target of reaching carbon neutrality by 2060, aligning the country with the global goal of limiting warming to 1.5° C over this period. China’s promise is very ambitious but within reach. It has been a great privilege for BCG to work closely with the National Energy Research Institute during 2020 to allow access to granular sector-level emissions data across China. China is the world’s largest annual carbon emitter due to its reliance on nonrenewable energy, large energy efficiency gaps and increasing energy demand. To achieve this goal, China will have to reduce roughly 50% of the emissions. The effort will require a huge investment—$13.5 to $15 trillion through 2050. But these investments should contribute 2% to 3% to GDP over that period and increase employment. Plus, decreased pollution will save lives and reduce health care costs. If China is successful, the goals of the Paris Agreement are within reach—especially if the US signs back on. China’s efforts should serve as an inspiration across countries. In BCG we also hope this effort can create a broader opportunity for the US and China to work together, despite the contentiousness between the two. #Chinaclimate #energytransition #BCG #netzero #carbonneutral #climatechange

In September, President Xi Jinping committed his country to achieving carbon neutrality by 2060 at the UN General Assembly, aligning China with a global target of limiting global warming to 1.5°C by 2100. This is a massive step for the world's largest emitter, but is China’s new target achievable? Reaching carbon neutrality requires massive reductions in emissions in the country’s relatively carbon-heavy economy.

In this report, our team together with the Energy Research Institute (ERI) under the NDRC (The National Development and Reform Commission of the People's Republic of China ) modeled how China can achieve this 1.5°C target and the most optimal path. We identified a holistic package of technological, regulatory, and other levers and quantified their impact and required investment across energy, industry, transport, agriculture, building & LULUCF (land use, land-use change, and forestry).

Please read our report authored by Baiping Chen, Thomas Palme, Ming Teck Kong, Dylan Lu, Lars Faeste, and myself with support from ERI and NDRC.
