Ruth Shuman

I-Corps Program

Ruth Shuman is a seasoned professional with a diverse background in science, business, and academia. She currently serves as the Program Director for the I-Corps Program at the National Science Foundation (NSF). Prior to NSF, Ruth was deeply involved in the life sciences industry as the founder, president, and CEO of Gentra Systems, Inc., a venture-backed company specializing in genetic testing products.

Ruth's journey in the scientific realm began as a faculty member at North Carolina State University, where she made significant contributions to gene transfer and genetic engineering technology. She holds a Ph.D. in Genetics and Cell Biology from the University of Minnesota, where she also completed her Master's and Bachelor's degrees in the same field.

At NSF, Ruth's expertise lies in biological and biomedical technologies, with a particular interest in synthetic biology and metabolic engineering. Her role as the former Program Director for the Biological Technologies topic area in the SBIR/STTR Program showcases her leadership and strategic vision in advancing innovative scientific initiatives.

In addition to her corporate experience, Ruth has also been involved in academia as the CEO-In-Residence for Life Science at the University of Minnesota's Venture Center, evaluating and nurturing technology-driven startups. Her rich tapestry of experiences reflects a deep-rooted passion for merging science with business and academia.
