Highlights
The MQ-4 Triton will be among the last ultra-high-end, non-stealth reconnaissance aircraft. Initially planned for 70 units, the program has now been reduced to 27 aircraft, with each unit costing $618 million, excluding the cost of necessary airfields. In a world where surface-to-air missiles cost around $1 million each, this presents a significant challenge.
Fortunately, just as Moore's law has shrunk our phones, it has also led to the miniaturization of reconnaissance aircraft. The unclassified mission systems from the MQ-4C Triton, from just 13 years ago, now fit on aircraft more than 300 times cheaper, 200 times smaller, and launchable from a Sprinter van.
MQ-4C Triton Key Mission Systems (2011):
🚢 Automatic Identification System (AIS) - Identifies and localizes cooperative maritime traffic.
📡 Electronic Support Measures (ESM) - Identifies and localizes radars, communication systems, and other active electronic systems.
📶 Wide Band Satellite Communications - Enables worldwide communication.
🎯 Multi-Function Active Sensor Maritime Radar - Detects and tracks targets over wide areas, including through fog.
📸 Multispectral Imager - Allows for the detection and identification of targets with powerful zoom and the ability to operate day or night.
🚁 Due Regard Radar - Ensures safe flight by avoiding collisions with other planes and helicopters, especially non-cooperative air traffic.
🖥 Advanced Mission Management - Integrates sensor data to enhance mission execution.
🔒 Common Data Link - Facilitates secure communication with other terrestrial systems.
Got a call from Brandon Tseng (my brother and Shield AI cofounder) this morning to let me know that Dad put up a photo of him, and not me, in his office. Unbelievable!
