Substack is a great example of how businesses can benefit from Progressive Web Apps. How? ⬇️

They launched their PWA app in December 2020, cautiously introducing it as a public Beta, asking users to provide public or private feedback.

The simple benefit offered to Substack readers was that the app would provide them with a cleaner experience, allowing them to see all their newsletter subscriptions in one place, rather than having to trawl through their cluttered email inboxes. Something that I think every user would want.

The app was quickly expanded to give writers access to their Dashboard, enabling them to write, edit, and schedule posts, as well as viewing stats and other key features. Functionality that is still missing from their iPhone and Android apps which were released in March 2022 and October 2022 respectively - 15-22 months after the PWA.

This clearly shows the benefits of PWAs and how they can fit into an overall app strategy:

⚡ Cheaper and faster to develop, release and update. 😎 Easy to convert users who were already viewing Substack on their phones into app users with a 1 tap install prompt. 🧑‍💻 Complex functionality such as the writer dashboard that has already been developed for the website doesn't need to be rewritten for the app. 📈 Feedback and usage data from PWA users can be fed into the more costly native app development process, reducing risk and ensuring better product-market fit.

Although I have the native app on my phone, I find myself using the PWA more often as it's simultaneously cleaner and more powerful.

Whilst PWAs are simple and lightweight they can still pack a punch and deliver real business benefits.

Have you used any of the Substack apps? Let me know what you think.
