This holiday season proved wild for museum technology, a field not generally prone to wildness! The New York Times reports that collections software purveyor Gallery Systems — the very widely-used and deeply technically entrenched eMuseum and TMS products, specifically — were hard hit by a recent Cyberattack, which befell a group of museums. (I felt a little thrill, I must say, to read that the Whitney Museum of American Art's digital collection — which, incidentally, was built under my leadership — came away unscathed because the museum hosts its own database!)
The core moral of this story is a rather obvious one, in 2024: Institutions must, must, MUST invest in strong technical leadership. (Here's looking at you, Bridget Mendoza! 💯) The "IT department," as it were, is an oft-overlooked and misunderstood core component of the museum's infrastructure — one more closely linked to the curatorial project than some might imagine, as evidenced by this week's drama.

I'm enamoured with Studio Museum in Harlem's new website, which unveils a new graphic identity by the design studio Pacific — they are just slaying it lately! — with the new site built by Base Design.
Here's what's good about this site: It foregrounds artists and the collection itself, embedding art directly into the user experience. It's elegant and clean as hell, employing a new, custom-drawn typeface and 100% Black as its primary color palette. But most of all, it is usable. Very usable.
When I work with institutions, I always talk about how, when a new identity system is unveiled, the public perception of an organization begins to change almost overnight. The Studio Museum is a legend and their new building will be a boon to Harlem and beyond. It's fantastic to see this identity work come to light at this very moment in time.
