Highlights
Some investors focus on who you are as a founder, or what you're building. This is arm-chair investing. Find a market with explosive tail winds, and a fundamental "Why Now." And seek an investor with the conviction to have an opinion about where the world is going, and how you align to that.
🌪 Build in a market with gale-force tail winds ⏩ Velocity investors will back a strong "Why Now" 🛠 Product investors will back a strong "What" 🙎♀️ Founder investors will back a strong "Who"
You can sell all three, but each investor has a bias in which they favor. I believe you can be a 6/10 product or founder and still win in a fast moving market, and you can be an 11/10 product or founder and still lose in a lackluster sector. Pick your battle wisely. Don't be distracted by early traction in a small market. Focus your limited time on huge ideas, and "Why Now." If you have regulatory change, new tech infrastructure, or an explosive "Why Now," go three sheets to the wind, and don't slow down for anyone who stands in your way.

In the contentious Twitter/X arena, my co-founder Jenny Fielding ruffled feathers when she suggested that pre-seed startups ought to have financial models. Some people balked because how could such an early company know everything about its future? Why would a founder waste their time? At Everywhere Ventures we shared a video, and sample model.
The primary value of a financial model is NOT in just having it. It is in going through the PROCESS of building it yourself. Only that gives you the fluency and depth of understanding your own business. Why? Because models:
💬 Give you fluency with the inputs, and drivers of your business ⁉ Force you to define, and stress-test, your own assumptions ➡ Allow you to think two steps ahead, with more rigor 📊 Are about preparedness, not about prediction
Build a model to gain fluency with your own business and define your assumptions. You'll raise money not because you're predicting the right things, but because you're demonstrating your ability to think systematically.
Investors are backing your preparedness, not your predictions. #venturecapital #financialmodels #preseed #earlystage
