Life Update:

I joined SEEK almost 2 years ago, with the focus of keeping SEEK platforms free from human trafficking and slavery. It was a wild time, with the rise of industrial scamming, fueled by trafficked labor, across Southeast Asia. The company took these threats VERY seriously, and we took proactive steps as concerns arose. It’s amazing to see a company live its values so clearly.

As SEEK completed the ambitious technology initiative of unifying all of its APAC platforms, there was significant investment in new technology and trust and safety teams. Within a few months of unification, the number of escalated cases had decreased significantly, while the number of likely bad actors picked up in the onboarding process had increased dramatically. The plan was working!

But I was also growing weary of missing evenings with Kels and our kids. I have been living in Hawaii, working Asia hours for nearly 4 years. Those dinners (and pre-dinner beach runs) were calling me.

So, when I saw a problem-solving role at Brigham Young University–Hawaii, my alma mater, and 3 miles from my house, I applied. I love BYUH. The dream has always been for me to work there full-time. Its mission is to provide a faith-based education for students from Asia and the Pacific. A key differentiator is that around half of the students are part of a fully funded work-study program. This allows low-income students from APAC the opportunity to receive a US university experience, without any debt, enabling them to return home prepared to build their communities. It’s a special place with a special mission. I am proud to be part of it full-time!

In other great news, I am not leaving SEEK! I will be shifting to a role as a Special Advisor. This will allow me to spend one evening a week supporting the teams at SEEK (especially WorkAbroad) as we help people get safe jobs across Asia.

It’s been almost a year since I joined SEEK. With this being my first “Corporate” job, friends warned that there was a real possibility that financial focus of working with a publicly listed company may create pressure to go against my ethics. I understood their concern. But based on conversations with Peter, Michele and Paul, I felt they had something special happening at SEEK. I wanted to be a part of it.    Luckily, I was right!   SEEK is dedicated to doing the real work needed to be a leader in Fair Hiring. After receiving a single report of a fraudulent job related to Pig Butchering scams, an emerging form of human trafficking in Southeast Asia, we took action. We blocked job ads in several high-risk countries. As you can imagine, these policies weren’t good for the bottom line, in the short term. But one of SEEK’s values is “we think and act for the long term”. There is nothing more important to the long term, than maintaining the trust of our candidates.   I am proud be part of a company that does the right thing, even when it’s hard.   Will there continue to be challenges in the future? Yep! The article below outlines our approach to these emerging challenges.
