Highlights
It's been a little while since I shared a professional update with my network, and I figured now would be a good time. Since leaving Vari a little under 2 years ago, I've been on the hunt for my next opportunity. I was lucky that I was able to be patient. I have a product business that's been a true education in the realities of DTC, I had quite a few discussions about starting or acquiring an ad agency, and I even got pretty far down the path of acquiring a stake in a small business in a completely different industry. And for various reasons, none of those opportunities have been the right one. That being said, I've learned a tremendous amount about myself and about doing business in the current environment. Being on a DTC rocket ship is a blast (haha), but I honestly never thought I'd have an opportunity to join a team similar to VariDesk in the early days. What we accomplished between 2014 and 2017 was nothing short of miraculous, and I had resigned myself to being comfortable with the fact that that experience was likely a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. And then I met ∆lexander Kunz. Alex, a former US Navy SEAL, originally founded Op2 Labs to productize a new type of collagen protein supplement. Over the last 12 years, they've been building an incredible infrastructure, steeped in science and research, to bring their products to the masses. And they're just hitting product-market fit. When Alex invited me onto the team to help take the Frog Fuel and ProT GOLD brands to the next level, I got very VariDesk vibes.
- Phenomenal product that works
- Belief in marketing as a primary driver
- Emerging category with a large potential TAM
- A rabid fanbase with an NPS of 80
- A lot of "love" for the products from their existing customers
Alex is even an EY Entrepreneur of the Year finalist this year. So, today marks the start of week 5 in my new role as Head of Marketing at OP2 Labs. I'm excited to see if we can match the VariDesk story (and I think we can). Also, I'm hiring! I'm looking for a Creative Director and Marketing Specialist to join the team. If you're interested (or know someone who is), please send them my way. Note that the roles are predominantly remote, but I'm looking for people in the DFW area who can travel to the office in Fort Worth a few times per month.
Hot take: You should allocate budget toward revalidating your product-market fit as part of every marketing campaign effort.
If I think back to every time I've had difficulties marketing a product (or service), it seems to come back to a breakdown in PMF.
Either the product was no longer competitive due to price or feature set, or the target audience no longer needed what we offered.
Or there was only ever weak PMF in the first place.
It's easy to forget that PMF is not static.
It will move with the industry and culture, and if you don't move with it, you'll be left with ever-increasing acquisition costs.
