I was diagnosed with kidney disease after college, when I was just beginning my career. Right from the start, the career I envisioned had to change, evolving to take on more doctor’s visits and later, three years of dialysis.
But this didn’t stop me from taking big swings. I was in the midst of dialysis and getting on kidney transplant waiting lists when I co-founded what would become Next Shift Learning. I believe I was able to do this because, along the way, I learned how to hold space: both for myself and for my colleagues and collaborators as we’re navigating all the highs and lows that come with building a business from scratch.
I also learned I can still build an incredible life. But these lessons took time, and a lot of hard-earned experience that helped me understand how to honor both my own needs and those of the people around me.
This is, of course, a more extreme example of building adaptability! But it’s something that’s crucial throughout all our careers. And next week, I’m so excited to be joining Next Shift Learning’s COO and my Co-Founder Tina Hossain, along with Stacey Long-Genovese, PhD, Global EdTech and L&D Leader (Snapchat, Amazon, AWS) and Morgan Williams, Co-Founder and CEO of PeakHR, for a webinar that will dive into practical tips for HR and L&D leaders to cultivate this skill.
