“We have a unique problem. We will have to conduct prisoner evictions because they don't want to leave.”
During my 6 years in India I visited a fair number of prisons and championed several social entrepreneurs who are re-envisioning, mending, bending and re-creating an archaic colonial prison system that simply doesn’t work. Perhaps the most interesting of these visionaries has been Smita Chakraburtty who is mainstreaming the age-old and proven concept of open-prisons.
Based on graded-liberty and dignity, she’s demonstrating the social and economic case for open prisons. Ashoka recently invited me to host a conversation with Smita about this concept and here are some of the highlights and recording of that.
This particular deep dive led me to identify and question a lot of my own assumptions and belief systems, something which powerful social entrepreneurs often make you do. I hope it’s the same for some of you as you read about Smita’s work.
