Every year, our community hosts events inviting children and adults to engage in friendly competitions through speeches, presentations, songs, and poetry on spiritual subjects. I never truly appreciated how phenomenal this activity is, especially for young children who typically don't get exposed to the art of public speaking until later in life. As an introvert, I always declined participation. However, my 4-year-old daughter is different. After just a few days of rehearsing her speech, she stood confidently at a podium before a room filled with about 50 women and children and told a story about how a prayer helped her recover a lost item. She won the room over with her opening line, “I’m waiting for everyone to be quiet, hehe”. Naira won first prize for her speech and 2nd prize for her recitation of the first chapter of the Holy Quran. It was spectacular.
This moment reminded me of how little time our current systems provide for us to fulfil our duties as parents to nurture these talents and skills, essential for shaping the next generation of leaders. Their little eyes and minds learn the world through us until they gain the skill of independence yet the professional world takes active steps to detach itself from the world of parenting. I’ve had the fortune of working with clients and partners who have always embraced my children in meetings but I know how much my peers struggle everyday.
