If I were an actor I wouldn't trust OAi to have a copy of my voice. I would trust Replica :)

--

Notes from Scarlett Johansson about how OpenAI's new voice sounds like her voice.

Honestly, I'm puzzled. What's uniquely troubling about this story is the fact that even though the parties (Johansson & OAi) did apparently not reach a deal, OAi persisted in literally creating the voice of 'Her' by hiring a soundalike to Johansson.

Hiring a sound alike is a pretty common thing to do. It happens all the time in advertising and other media for reasons just like this. (Can't hire the actor, can't reach a deal, too expensive, not available etc.)

So technically, I don't know if OAi actually broke the law here? (not a lawyer).

However... Given the current state of controversy over 'GenAI v/s the artists', and the fact that OAi have been repeatedly pushed to be more transparent on training data and have been busy racking up lawsuits - this move (hiring a sound alike) shows a lack of empathy and understanding as to the real feelings of talent and what this technology means to them (talent).
