Marketplace businesses are often touted as the next big thing - how many times have you heard a startup pitched as the "Uber or Airbnb for XYZ"?

It's easy to get swept up in the fantasy of marketplace network effects. More buyers attract more sellers, and vice versa, creating a virtuous cycle of growth. Right?

As a founder of a marketplace business, I can tell you it's not that simple.

▶ Network effects aren't created equal. It's crucial to dig deeper and assess their true significance. Are they local or global? How substantial is the additional revenue the marketplace can bring to sellers?

▶ Look for fragmented buyer and seller bases. Counterintuitively, having many smaller participants rather than a few large ones leads to stronger network effects. It enhances the value of search and discovery functions and makes rating systems more crucial.

▶ Buyers should perceive differentiated sellers or products. Without this, price becomes the only differentiator, leading to a race to the bottom.

▶ The marketplace should enable discovery and improve transactions. It needs to solve real pain points, not just exist as a middleman.

Personally, I'm excited about marketplaces that tackle complex, high-value transactions or bring technology to traditionally offline industries. Those that can create true efficiencies and unlock new value are the ones that catch my eye.

What's your take? What do you think makes for a successful marketplace business? Let's discuss in the comments!

People don't think of immigration as a "VC issue," but nothing could be further from the truth.

The data is overwhelming:

1️⃣ Immigrants or their children have founded 2/3 of America's billion-dollar startups.

2️⃣ Immigrants are nearly twice as likely to start businesses as native-born Americans, and have founded or co-founded about 30% of all venture-backed companies in the U.S. In Silicon Valley, this number jumps to 51% of startup founders.

3️⃣ Immigrant-founded companies produce more patents and cite more patents than native-founded companies.

As an immigrant myself, I've witnessed firsthand the unique perspectives and relentless drive that come from navigating multiple cultures. Our experiences often lead to identifying unmet needs and creative solutions that might be overlooked by others. This innovative spirit, born from necessity and adaptation, is a powerful force in entrepreneurship.

At Symphonic Capital, this insight is core to our investment thesis. We're actively seeking founders who bring fresh perspectives and solutions based on their lived experiences, particularly in the health and wealth sectors. This is why we're committed to supporting immigrants and diverse founding teams.

By backing these visionaries, we're not just investing in companies – we're investing in the power of diverse experiences to shape a better future for all. The numbers speak for themselves.
