Highlights
Authentic. What the **** does this word even mean? What has it become?
It's a great word, but I think it has become 'inauthentic,' and over-used because it is easy to talk about, but entirely another thing to do.
I have told people and clients, "don't worry what others think," and others have said to it me. One of my favourites is, "what others think of you is none of your business."
But we do - I do - worry about what others think, don't we?
Of course! Our nervous systems tell us to 'fit in or die,' it goes back to our times of living in caves, but our cellular memory of it is still there! Ever wondered why public speaking is a such a big deal and fear? We want to get it right. We want to fit in. We want applause and approval, but sometimes it just ain't comin', and that is okay, isn't it? (I did my 'first big break' corporate talk to 500 people in 2001. I was so ready and keen and thought I did a great job. When I got the feedback, I scored 1/10! It served me well to remember to be myself, rather than what I felt I should be.)
Being authentic takes guts, boldness and the willingness to fail. Give me anyone who fails greatly in the process of being authentic, and I will give you a hero!
Points to consider:
-
I think authenticity is our willingness to be 'authentic about our inauthenticities' i.e. honest about the lies we tell to ourselves and others that has us be so.
-
Being authentic is the willingness to look weak, vulnerable, embarrassed or an idiot! What's beautiful about this is that when we tell the truth, others often say, "Thank you, and thank God, someone had the guts to say what we all felt!"
-
Being authentic in my view is the willingness to take on that thing that scares us the most, that has us in its grip, to share it appropriately, and see the complete illusion that it is (which is why I am called the Naked Speaker - being naked was my biggest fear, now, it's just 'being naked,' something we are all rumoured to be, under our clothes!)
Here's the description and etymology of the word authentic:
Dictionary Definition: True to one's own personality, spirit, or character; real or genuine; not copied or false. Merriam Webster Online Dictionary.
Etymology: ...mid-14c., autentik, from Old French autentique "authentic; canonical", and directly from Medieval Latin authenticus, from Greek authentikos "original, genuine, principal," from authentes "one acting on one's own authority,"... From
