The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has taken a significant step towards safeguarding our digital world by releasing the first three finalized post-quantum encryption standards. These standards—ML-KEM, ML-DSA, and SLH-DSA—are designed to protect our data in the coming era of quantum computing. As quantum computing technology advances, the encryption methods we currently rely on could become vulnerable to quantum attacks, threatening the security of sensitive communications and transactions. NIST has been at the forefront of addressing this challenge, working with experts globally to develop cryptographic algorithms resilient to the power of quantum computers.
The newly finalized standards include: ML-KEM (Module-Lattice Key Encapsulation Mechanism): This algorithm is designed for public key encryption and is built to resist the quantum attacks that could break traditional cryptographic methods. ML-DSA (Module-Lattice Digital Signature Algorithm): A robust digital signature algorithm that ensures the authenticity of messages and data in a quantum-secure manner. SLH-DSA (Stateless Hash-Based Digital Signature Algorithm): An alternative digital signature algorithm that leverages hash-based methods to provide strong security guarantees without reliance on state, making it highly suitable for applications requiring long-term security.
These standards are not only a technical achievement but also a vital part of ensuring that our communication systems remain secure as we transition into the quantum era. By adopting these new encryption standards, organizations can start preparing their infrastructure for the challenges that quantum computing will bring, ensuring that their data remains protected in the face of new technological advancements. #PQC #cybersecurity #HSM #FPGA
Today I had the privilege to host a panel at the UAS Summer School 2024 in Tartu (organized by the Estonian Aviation Academy) attended by Paul Liias, Sven Lilla, Mihkel Pajusalu and Kaupo Voormansik. We talked about the Estonia's current landscape in space system development, strengths and weaknesses. What we could do to build a strong ecosystem and how to prepare students for careers in the space industry. And more .... We tackled the topics considering different angles: the government, the academy, the local space business incubator and the industry. Thank you all! (Photo by Tiziano Fiore)
