I have to say that it’s definitely been a minute since I’ve had first day of school jitters or felt the pressure of wanting to wear that perfectly fly first day outfit. You know, the one that looks like you didn’t overthink it but just seemed to effortlessly strike the perfect balance between your personal style and enviable cool because you woke up like this, obvi. 😆
Well yesterday, I definitely felt those jitters as I strolled into my law school alma mater American University Washington College of Law to begin my first day as an adjunct professor teaching Business Associations or Corporations as some call it.
To say I was nervous would be an understatement. There’s nothing like knowing that your over-subscribed class of approx 90 students are expecting you to bring it on your first time out of the gate teaching for an entire semester. Plus, the daunting task of teaching a 4-credit core law school course is like “no pressure,” right?
At the same time, I was and still am incredibly grateful, humbled and thrilled. 🙏🏾When I was asked to teach this semester, I was shocked and unsure. Yes, teaching something in law school is on my vision board. But it was supposed to happen some day in the distant future. My next decade even. And it was supposed to be a fluffy 2-credit seminar, not this subject matter behemoth
But after sitting with it and remembering that the universe operates on its own timelines, and they are never wrong, I decided to accept the call and embrace the challenge. I mean, who says no to a charge like having the opportunity to serve and usher minds (even some older than me) through an exciting legal landscape that has served as the foundation of much of my practice and experiences? Definitely not this girl. Challenge what? Say less.
So, this is me, reporting from the other side of Day 1 of BA. I am happy to share that we all survived (particularly me), and I can already tell that it’s going to be an adventure to remember. Even though it is mind-blowing to be on the other side of the podium, my students are fantastic. They humored me by playing a game and came with thought-provoking questions and willing attitudes.
My goal is to honor the opportunity and daily rise to the occasion by delivering the experience I wish I had when I took BA. One where the material is clearly, thoughtfully and compellingly conveyed. One where they learn concepts but really understand how to apply them and the practical implications they hold. One that engages their critical thinking and activates their curiosity. Definitely one where they aren’t bored to tears, but are transported to the world beyond the classroom where they can visualize their amazing careers ahead, even if corporate isn’t their area of choice.
I’ve set lofty goals, but aiming for excellence in service and infusing a high degree of care is a must for me.
And I plan to make this semester an unforgettable experience for my students. They deserve nothing less.
I know. I know. I’m super late on this one and catching up on posts 🙈, but it’s still August and I just had to take a moment to rewind the tape and reflect on yet another amazing Martha’s Vineyard experience.
It was a quick trip this year, filled with more memories and magical moments than any 3 days should be expected to have. I am still brimming and buzzing with gratitude and energized for the work ahead. From not even planning to make the trip this year to answering the island’s call, it was awesome. My heart and soul are full. I am encouraged that we’re gonna be alright because we are getting the memo with its collective agenda enclosed, rowing in the same direction from wherever we reside and are carrying out our purposes and passions. We are doing the work, and the need to take leaps versus tiptoeing to our economic advancement as a community is a clarion call that we are answering, en masse. 👏🏾👏🏾
This year’s highlights for me included the amazing panels put on by Center for American Progress. The Gathering events at the Atria put on by Christal M. Jackson and her fabulous team, along with a beautiful and memorable clam bake on the beach. A personal high point was the health equity panel that AWSM SCTY had the pleasure of putting on alongside Lola A. and the The Aspen Institute. My co-founder Fritz Desir, CSPO, CSM🇭🇹🇬🇾 worked his usual magic as we were honored to feature inspiring guests advancing causes in the health space who left us with critical insights and calls to action. Ending my time on the island with the TIGER 21 event hosted by the powerhouse that is Lorine Pendleton and others that featured gorgeous art, intros to wealth-building resources and the opportunity to set new intentions/goals and make new connections while strengthening existing ones like Marvet Britto was the true chef’s kiss.
So many “aha” moments came from experiencing the real-time intersection of tech, venture, entertainment, the arts and policy. So often we exist and operate within our silos. But there is a real power that comes from cross-pollination, educating ourselves on what we are each doing and what we need to throw our support behind as brothers and sisters in arms who are making sure progress is made for the community on all fronts.
Special thanks and shout-outs also to among others William Cunningham, Derrick T. Smith, Giselle Melo, Victoria Kennedy, Lynette Rawlings, PhD, Kent Lucas, Erika Stuart, and of course Captain Joe for giving us our first boat tour of MV/reminding us that life is precious and full of beautiful humans and magical moments if we choose to see them and say YES.🙏🏾
Until next time MV, you magical island portal. 🏝️✨
LFG 🚀🙌🏾💪🏾🫶🏾
