Highlights
In my upcoming book, 'The Upside of Disruption: The Path to Leading and Thriving in the Unknown,' I discuss the 'Peanut Butter Strategy' - a leadership blind spot best described as spreading peanut butter across endless initiatives that continue to evolve no matter what. The result is a thin layer of attention spread across everything we do; thus, we focus on nothing. All of us are one step away from this must-avoid scenario. Without a coherent ‘No’ strategy, we suffer priority overload, which leaves teams misaligned, overwhelmed, and at risk of burnout.
With workloads heading to extreme levels of hyperactivity, what would happen if you set a goal to say 'No' to 100 work-related requests in one year? This is what four scientists decided to do (saying no to 25 requests each) and track what happened collectively.
As the FT reports: "First, tracking your work makes it easier to say no, partly because you get a better idea of everything you’re doing. One of our big takeaways was that 100 declines collectively is great, but it’s not enough. So now we’re trying for 100 each in the year ending December 2024, so we should say no to 400 things together."
At a time when leaders waste over 700 hours a year on excess bureaucracy (working 2,100 hours a year in total), dealing with over 30,000 emails each, 3X more meetings, and a culture of distraction where technology makes the trivial seem urgent but not important, now is the time to re-think your 'No' strategy and decide what matters or risk spreading yourself too thinly like peanut butter.

I wrote The Upside of Disruption: The Path to Leading and Thriving in the Unknown because we always overestimate the risk of trying something new and underestimate the risk of standing still.
I look forward to exploring the surprising insights and takeaways from the book on September 3 at 12.45 pm ET with John Baldoni on the Grace Under Pressure LinkedIn Live show.
When disruption is the norm, not taking a risk is a risk.
