TSMC Senior Vice President Dr. Kevin Zhang gave an insightful presentation at #ISSCC2024 on the latest technology developments in the semiconductor industry.

I had a major burnout in 2021 and subsequently quit my job at Augumenta. During my recovery, I started feeling bored: my brain was not made to sit idle. I decided to begin a new "hobby": a technology scouting project for a major smartphone OEM, focusing on next-gen system architectures and how to avoid performance bottlenecks caused by ever-increasing amounts of data transferred at the system level, especially within the camera subsystem.

While reviewing the latest academic research in silicon development, I noticed silicon photonics as a promising method for moving vast amounts of data: instead of traditional copper interconnects, why not use photons and build optical interfaces directly at the silicon level? The topic was one of my final report's findings.

Fast forward to today: silicon photonics featured in the TSMC presentation as a future tech enabler 😎

JASM (TSMC's majority-owned subsidiary with Sony, DENSO, and Toyota as minority shareholders) opened its first fab in Japan on Saturday. The fab will focus on commodity chips using 40nm, 22/28nm, and 12/16nm nodes, with production starting in 4Q 2024.

The construction project was finished in record time, starkly contrasting with TSMC's Arizona project, which has been experiencing various delays.

The work on a second fab is already ongoing. Located next to the first one, its chip production on 6/7nm process technologies is scheduled to start by the end of 2027.

CommonWealth Magazine wrote an interesting story about the history of this venture: https://lnkd.in/gfdaBeZK
