Tobias Frere-Jones is a prominent American type designer, born on August 28, 1970, in New York City. He is the founder of Frere-Jones Type, an independent type design practice based in New York. Frere-Jones is widely recognized for his contributions to typography, having created several influential typefaces, including Gotham, which gained fame during the Obama 2008 presidential campaign, and Archer, used by notable brands such as Martha Stewart Living and Wells Fargo.14
Education and Early Career
Frere-Jones developed an interest in letter design while attending Saint Ann's School in Brooklyn. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1992. Following his graduation, he joined Font Bureau in Boston, where he became a senior designer and contributed to well-known typefaces like Interstate.15
Hoefler & Frere-Jones
In 1999, he moved to New York and began collaborating with Jonathan Hoefler, leading to the formation of Hoefler & Frere-Jones. This partnership produced numerous acclaimed typefaces used by major publications and organizations. However, in 2014, Frere-Jones left the partnership amid legal disputes and subsequently established his own studio, Frere-Jones Type.16
Teaching and Recognition
Frere-Jones has been teaching typeface design at the Yale School of Art since 1996 and has lectured internationally. His work is featured in prestigious collections such as the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. He has received several accolades, including the Gerrit Noordzij Prize in 2006 and the AIGA Medal in 2013 for his exceptional achievements in design.145
