Last month, I had the privilege of speaking at the ACADEMYWOMEN Careers Conference! ✨ With 550+ attendees who are either in the midst of transitioning from the military within three years or have recently made the transition in the past 18 months, the energy and determination in the room were palpable. 💯

During the session, I delved into the nuances of the civilian recruiting lifecycle and shared insights into the secrets held by recruiters and hiring managers. From decoding job descriptions to identifying the best AI tools for resumes/LinkedIn profiles, mastering interview structures, navigating decision-making processes, staying informed about state employment laws, and skillfully negotiating compensation—attendees learned tips on how to strategically leverage each stage of the recruiting process to #GetHired.

Having transitioned from the Air Force over 10 years ago and led veteran hiring programs for various organizations, I know firsthand how crucial it is to create a supportive environment for our transitioning veterans and I’m proud to be part of that effort now.

📢 To anyone in the military community navigating their transition, remember that your service is invaluable and your skills are highly sought after. If you have any questions or need insights, feel free to DM me directly. We are more than happy to share the Military #GetHired Resource folder we provided at the conference.

A special shoutout to Jacqueline S., Susan Feland, and the Academy Women team for consistently curating incredible events for women and creating a platform for veterans like us to share experiences and insights. Let's continue to empower and support this community of service members who have given so much to us!

Missed our live discussion yesterday on the transformative power of Coaching, Mentorship, and Sponsorship? Don't worry, the replay is now available!

Some highlights from the session include...

⭐ #Coach #Mentor #Sponsor – What’s the difference?

  • A coach talks TO YOU.
  • A mentor talks WITH YOU.
  • A sponsor talks ABOUT YOU.

⭐ Who drives these relationships?

  • Both drive in a coaching relationship.
  • The mentee drives a mentoring relationship.
  • A sponsor drives the relationship by advocating for you behind closed doors in spaces you are not present. (Also, you may not always know who some of your sponsors are so make sure the right people have the information to frive influence on your behalf!)

⭐ Leverage 3 Types of Mentors

  • People Who Do Your Work (Technical Experts): These individuals have depth and breadth in your professional discipline, aiding in your proficiency.
  • People Who Are Where You Want To Be ("Success Leaves Clues"): Seek guidance from those who've walked the path you aspire to. If they can get there, so can you!
  • People Who Look Like You (Share Your Identities): Find mentors who share your identities, intersections, and backgrounds for relatable conversations and unique perspectives that stem from personal experiences.

Thank you to our fantastic moderator Jackie Ferguson, CDE®, plus panelists Kerry Shad and BRENTLEY WRIGHT, CDE® for their insights. Special shoutout to Kaela Sosa, CDE® for making this all happen behind the scenes! Your team's dedication to fostering a culture of growth and support is truly commendable.
