Enjoyed doing this interview with G&M News and discussing the Ontario iGaming regime.   After only two years the Ontario market offers 50 well-regulated private operators as well as PlayOLG.  In its second year of operation, the private sector market saw $63 billion in wagering, $2.4 billion in gross gaming revenue, and nearly $500 million dollars in new tax revenue for Ontario.

Ontario channeled almost 90% of the play into the legal and regulated market. Other provinces, that offer only a state monopoly model, captures about 20% of the total market share, and only 11% of sports betting.

Ontario’s high channelization rate means that almost all Ontario players benefit from best-in-class responsible gaming features and a series of other consumer protections.

For any Canadian province that truly wants to provide a safer online gaming landscape for their citizens, a regulatory model, in addition to their lottery corporation site, is the only viable policy option.

The Ontario iGaming regulatory regime is a great success. It has channeled 86% of all online gaming play through legal and licensed sites and earned almost $500 million a year for the government of Ontario.

At the same the Ontario Lottery & Gaming Corporation online gaming revenues increased by 31%, and their monthly player count improved by 22%, putting the “cannibalization argument” to rest.

The model provides Ontario citizens with robust consumer protections, responsible gaming features, consumer choice, and anti-money laundering features.

It is time for other Canadian provincial decision makers to introduce similar regimes to protect their citizens.
