Highlights
Maybe I am a #DEI hire?
We're in the familiar part of the change process when backlash to this work once again takes center stage -- when those who fear a loss of power try to be the loudest voice; when personal attacks on people's identities dominate the news as they take the form of institutionalized bigotry; when the subject matter expertise of DEI practitioners is shunned in organizations in favor of those who appear less threatening to the status quo; when the very language that drives our work is usurped by an uninformed few to serve a purpose rooted in hatred.
We know that "DEI hire" is a dog whistle.
But I refuse to allow a few people with exactly zero working knowledge about the true scope of DEI work to take the acronym and its associated concepts and bastardize them for nefarious purposes. As practitioners, we have to stop accepting every instance of coopting of the terms that drive our work and reclaim our narrative and reclaim our time, like the good Congresswoman taught us to do.
🌎 Indeed, I am someone who believes that the #diversity offered by the world is a great benefit to my own learning and personal development.
💼 Indeed, I know that being part of a diverse global team is ultimately a benefit to the #business, the products we build, and the people we serve.
🥇I believe in creating a more equitable society, where my background and my identity is not the sole determinant of my destiny or a barrier to my success.
🧑🏿⚖️ I believe that my background and identity shouldn't determine my access to the many institutions of this nation ranging from education to governance.
🫂 And I absolutely believe in our capacity to be inclusive, curious, and compassionate -- our drive to seek the perspectives of those different from us and meaningfully incorporate them into our decision-making.
That's what it should mean to be a DEI hire. And if that's the narrative we choose to lean into, then I'm all in as a DEI hire. And I want DEI Presidents, CEOs, leaders, colleagues, and friends walking this journey with me.
What other parts of our narrative should we reclaim? Let me know in the comments (keep it cute) 👇🏿
And if you don't know by now, I'm Ulysses (sis, not sees). I focus my content on DEI & #ESG strategy and moving the practice beyond #HR, especially in #tech and #AI. I critique my own and our field's work as much as I do the organizations who espouse their alleged commitments, often with a touch of humor. I'm even wrong sometimes. Join me on this journey.

Hold up. Is this for real?
If you're a #DEI practitioner and (alleged) expert in this space still pushing the concept of "tolerance" as a core part of your training curriculum in Beyonce's year 2024...
Throw the whole training away. And retire.
Not even going to attempt to give my typical bullet point tips on this one. I can't even. 🤦🏿🙄
