I’ve been traveling around the county speaking at colleges, libraries and bookstores for the past year, but I think it’s really important I get back to writing. The moment calls for it.

With many states limiting what can be taught in schools, having access to accurate, well-researched historical information is really important. I want to help fill that gap.

Today I am relaunching my newsletter Run It Back with a focus on neglected black history that extends beyond the Civil War and Civil Rights Movement. I will write about the past in ways that make it clear why our history still matters today. And I’ll do it in a way that’s accessible to readers of all ages.

I’ve presented my writing and research at 15 colleges and the Smithsonian’s National Museum for African American History and Culture. I’m obsessive about footnotes and rigorous fact checking. I’ll do my best to get things right and correct the record when I don’t.

I need your help to get this effort off the ground. Please consider becoming a paid subscriber to Run It Back, which will help me keep this writing free and accessible to all. More in the link below.

Built From the Fire is out in paperback today! It’s been just over a year since the book came out. I’ve gotten to speak about the history of Greenwood from Seattle to Sarasota, hosted a yearlong community read here in Tulsa, and helped produce a Lauryn Hill-inspired “Talking Book” concert in my hometown of Montgomery.

One of the biggest highlights of the last year was getting to speak at more than a dozen colleges across the United States, including HBCU's, big state schools, and liberal arts colleges. Over the next year I'll be working hard to get my paperback edition used as a text in more courses and freshman/campus reads across the country. Built From the Fire is already being used as a classroom text in an education course at the University of Arkansas, an honors course at Oklahoma State University, a Black Wall Street class at the College of Charleston, and more.

The most important decision I made on this journey was at the very beginning, when I decided to write a book about creation rather than destruction. Greenwood is always creating—new businesses, new bonds, new routes toward justice amidst a million roadblocks. It's been an honor to capture part of this legacy. Let's keep building.
