I recently disappeared into the desert and plains of the American Southwest and spent a long while away from the internet. I heard levels of silence that I didn’t know existed. I dug myself into the white sands of the tallest dune I could find.

Because of the topography, I got to witness what felt like two different sunsets in one evening. The car made its way to the top of the next mountain to see the sun a second time just as Pink Floyd’s “The Dark Side of the Moon” hit the halfway point in what felt like a scene in a movie.

I found a few pieces of me in the desert. I also left a few pieces there. Like one of those Little Free Libraries, I gave a little and a took a little.

If there is one thing I’d share with you all about this experience, it would be to log off and go find yourself. The “thought leadership” on our niche does little for our soul. Asking each other to “please clap” for our professional accomplishments doesn’t fill our cups like we thought it would.

You’re already there, waiting for yourself. In the sand, in the water, on top of that mountain, or in grass. Go find you.

Neurotypical folks (most of y’all) and Neurodivergent people (the few like me) are merely speaking different, but equally valid, social languages. As such, it’s on you, as much as it is on me, to bridge the gap. So when people ask me to change how I communicate, I’ve started to ignore it.

It is not my burden to carry the success of our relationship by bending over backwards and reducing my life expectancy to jump through artificial hoops to be partially understood (and still negatively judged).

The idea that neurodivergent folks need to “learn better skills” is deeply flawed, incorrect, and has contributed to extreme levels of stress and unemployment in neurodivergent people for long enough. We are often the only ones doing the labor of communicating when all parties should be contributing.

I’ve begun to unapologetically reclaim it all. No, I will not make eye contact with you through our entire conversation. Yes, I will look away often. I will ask follow up questions when I don’t quite understand something you said and you will answer them just as I would. I will march us through difficult topics, especially if it feels like you are avoiding them. No more apologies or explanations for ear plugs, headphones, asking people to repeat what they just said, not responding immediately, or saying that I have to come back with my thoughts later.

No more apologies or explanations, period. It’s time y’all start showing up to our conversations and in our relationship. Instead of me traveling all the way to you, it’s time for you to start meeting me halfway.
