My wife, Nicole Midori Woodford, a filmmaker, lecturer, and mother, achieved a huge milestone in writing and directing her debut feature film, ‘Last Shadow at First Light’, starring Masatoshi Nagase, Mariko Tsutsui, Mihaya Shirata (Japan), and Peter Yu (Singapore). Over the past year, Nicole’s film has premiered in several film festivals, having its world premiere at the 71st San Sebastián International Film Festival (2023). Over the course of a year, ‘Last Shadow at First Light’ has earned several nominations and awards.

In Singapore, ‘Last Shadow at First Light’ has been having its theatrical release at The Projector cinemas, now in its 3rd week of screening: https://lnkd.in/gwritkxS

And to further support this amazing local talent and filmmaker, I had the privilege of designing all marketing materials, from the title card, film posters, opening and ending credits, trailer layouts, press kit, to social media content. It’s been one helluva year and I’m proud to be able to support Nicole’s filmmaking career.

So why am I sharing this? Well not only do I believe Nicole deserves to be given credit for creating such an intricate and sensitive story, but her endeavour is like countless other film directors working hard for the next big thing – to capture a story worth telling on the cinema screen. As viewers, it’s amazing that we have an endless choice of film titles that can be watched at the comfort of home. And yes, streaming services seem like a better deal over purchasing a movie ticket – but that movie ticket is worth more than a monthly subscription. It’s worth the support of arthouse films, worth the support of the village of people who made their films come to life, and worth our experience of taking pause and intently viewing stories that leave us something to think about.
