Yaowen Deng is a second-year graduate student at the Oxford Department of International Development (ODID) pursuing an MPhil in Development Studies.

With a background in philosophy, Yaowen transitioned into social sciences through LGBTQ+ and feminist activism, gaining expertise in qualitative & ethnographic research.

Passionate about addressing social issues, Yaowen's focus shifted to energy and climate change research upon witnessing environmental deterioration in China.

Currently delving into the field of energy transitions, Yaowen aims to contribute a critical social science perspective to the discourse on clean energy transition, particularly focusing on energy democracy and justice.

Yaowen's master's thesis investigates the politics of energy transitions and environmental justice in South Africa, emphasizing civil society's role in challenging fossil fuel investments through litigation strategies.

Seeking opportunities in research and internships related to energy transitions, climate change, environmental protection, and Africa-China relationships, Yaowen is open to collaborations and connections.

Yaowen's educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts with Honors in Philosophy from Nanjing University, a Master of Philosophy in Development Studies from Oxford, and various study programs at esteemed universities worldwide.

Having served in roles such as Sustainability Consultant at Six Degrees and Policy Researcher at the Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford, Yaowen has a diverse organizational experience encompassing research, analysis, and advocacy.
