My mother was a survivor of the 1939 earthquake in Erzincan Turkiye that hit the city with a force of 7.8 in the early hours of the morning. The earthquake took close to 40 thousand lives and injured 100,000.

When I was a little girl, my mother used to tell me her stories of the earthquake from her then 7 year old eyes. The way she was awakened before the earthquake with the whining and kicking of the horses…how she went out to check up on them…how then the earth roared and shook under her with a sound that was haunting. And how she heard the cries for help from under the rubble for days afterwards.

I don’t think she ever knew how those stories ended up etching a permanent fear in my soul. She also had fear and trauma. We always had a bottle of water and flash lights next to our beds when we slept … in case the earthquake came to get us. She always loved horses maybe because their premonition saved her life. When I was cleaning her bedroom after she died, I remember finding and holding on to her flashlight.

The earthquake never got my mother. But just like it killed many in Erzincan it came back this past week with the same deadly force and took the lives of many thousands of Turks and Syrians.

We mourn for the dead and the deaths break our hearts. But the living need our help. Canadian Government is matching donations. Please help generously.
