My heart is heavy remembering Kobe but here we go. I found this bear in my closet and it made me smile. It was a gift giveaway at one of Kobe’s charity events (if not the 1st) early in his career - a bowling event - that I attended as a representative of the NBA League Office. His family was there too. Thought it was cute, so I kept it. A few years later, I read a newspaper article about a Bronx teen who had been shot and killed. His family buried him in a Kobe jersey because he was a big fan it said. I sent it to Rob Pelinka (Kobe’s agent) who called me to say that the story struck a cord with Kobe and he wanted to send something to the family. He asked if I could track down contact info. I did. A few more years later at an All Star Weekend Event, we were almost crushed as fans rushed to touch him at an appearance. I was horrified, Kobe thought it was funny. Said he was use to it. I was blessed to work and chat with Kobe several times but what I glimpsed is that he loved his family and had an affection for his fans. #RIPKOBEANDGIANNA The NBA Hall Of Fame awaits you posthumously.
Within the first few weeks of working at the NBA, I was on the elevator alone when it stopped, the doors opened and in walks David Stern, alone. He quickly said hello, saw that I had a book in my hand and asked what I was reading. I told him “Sula” by Toni Morrison. He said she was one of his favorite authors too and we discussed the book until he departed the elevator.
On another occasion many, many years later David was on the elevator when I got on to head out for lunch. I was wearing a winter hat with the Denver Nuggets logo on it. It was the kind they gave out as part of a staff holiday gift set. Without missing a beat he said “I like your hat”.
That is the David I’ll remember. Always personable, funny and engaging.
