Greetings from Nairobi! 🇰🇪
When Amélie Desjardins reached out to me to give a seminar on investment readiness to the 2022-23 winning cohort of the Solar X Challenge from the International Solar Alliance (provided in partnership with Intellecap), I said - I’ll do you one better and actually fly to you! ✈️
A few weeks later, here I am discovering #Kenya and its vibrant ecosystem. From the natural beauty to the kindness of the people (not to mention the food portions!), everything has been incredibly inspiring.
It’s so gratifying being able to work with impactful founders and organizations. It’s always been one of my favourite parts of my job, and I can’t wait to see where it takes me next 😉
Today I changed all my job descriptions to the past tense.
It was a bittersweet moment, both surreal and profoundly gratifying. The last 6 years at Real Ventures have taught me many, many lessons - here are 6 of them which have had the biggest impact on my development:
1️⃣ Change is the only constant ⏳
The world will never stop changing. Either you change with it, or it moves on without you. There is no “perfect” moment to wait for before starting that new project, or taking that next step.
2️⃣ All awareness begins with self-awareness 🧘🏻♂️
External awareness without self-awareness is not growth, only judgment. True growth cannot happen if you are not willing to self-examine and question your own biases.
3️⃣ Institutions are made up of human beings 👯
It is easy to think of institutions as opaque façades, but let’s not forget that they are also made up of individuals. Each with their own perspectives, realities and experiences.
4️⃣ Never stop being curious 🧠
Open-mindedness is a practice and a habit. It can be exercised and honed, just like it can lapse and be forgotten.
5️⃣ What it means to be part of an ecosystem 🌎
To be part of something greater than yourself is an indescribable feeling. Always pay it forward.
6️⃣ How you show up today is who you are (and that’s okay too) 🥰
Owning who you are is accepting how you showed up in every interaction. Aim for authenticity, show up responsibly, and look back with compassion.
Thank you for everything (you know who you are) 🙏🏻
