🤒 Over the past 7 days, I've been battling vertigo (wouldn't wish this on anyone) and earlier this year, I was diagnosed with Pericarditis which had a very long recovery time!

It got me thinking - The reality of being a freelancer / entrepreneur is that it comes with its own unique challenges. It requires a lot of bravery to navigate the uncertainties, especially when health issues arise. But despite the risks, the freedom and fulfillment that come with being a freelancer or entrepreneur make it all worthwhile. 💪✨

For some, every sick day is a potential risk of losing clients and projects, which adds another layer of stress to recovery. 😟 I'm incredibly grateful for my amazing clients who have been so understanding and supportive during this time 🙏

But it did lead me to wonder - Do any other freelancers out there share these concerns? How do you manage the balance between work and taking care of your health? Let's support each other through these tough times. 🤝🌟

SALES COMMISSION:

I am building a new commission structure for client and it made me revisit my principals I rely on to build a commission framework.

What are the principals you rely on?

When you are building a sales team, remember the power the commission plan to motivate salespeople not only to sell more, but to act in a certain way is critical. When you are a CEO or VP of Sales - your compensation plan is the most powerful tool you have.

  1. Simplicity: It should be able to be explained on the back of a business card otherwise the commission will not be the driver of their behaviour and instead is a result of whatever behaviour they want.

  2. Alignment: Do the incentives motivate the needle the business wants to move? If you need new logos in trials, but your commission structure incentivises Master Agreements, your sales team will spend time in the trial funnel to secure their commission.

  3. Immediacy: When sales people succeed they should feel it immediately - this is the only way they will curb their behaviour. Any delay - good or bad removes the impact of the plan.

  4. Transparency: I always include the sales team in the decision of what their commission should be - although I ensure they are aware of the business context so I am not asking their opinion under false pretences, I actually gave them enough information to provide a real opinion.

Sales cycle specific rules:

  • the more account management involved in the role - the higher the salary vs commission
  • the longer the sales cycle, the higher the salary vs commission

What else do you consider when building an incentive plan?
