Amanda Itliong
Educational Leader, Facilitator, and Consultant
Amanda Kay Crowell Itliong was a dedicated advocate for ovarian cancer awareness and patient care who passed away on May 6, 2023, at the age of 43.2 Born in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, she grew up in Rochester Hills, Michigan.13
Amanda had a distinguished academic background, earning a bachelor's degree in Human Services from The George Washington University and a master's degree in Administration, Planning and Social Policy from Harvard University.13 She also held a graduate certificate in Dialogue, Deliberation and Public Engagement from Fielding Graduate University.13
Throughout her career, Amanda worked in various roles focused on public service and education. She served as the Director of Learning and Volunteerism at the University of West Florida, worked at Stanford University's Haas Center for Public Service, and was the Family Literacy Manager at United Way for Southeastern Michigan.13
In 2015, after her fourth cancer recurrence, Amanda returned to Michigan and intensified her work as an advocate, activist, and researcher for cancer patients.13 She was particularly passionate about improving patient care for people of color and members of historically marginalized groups.13
Amanda was personally involved with STAAR Ovarian Cancer, volunteering her skills and knowledge to help reach patients from diverse backgrounds.13 She lived with ovarian cancer for 15 years, benefiting from drug trials specifically targeted for Low-Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer (LGSOC).13
For her contributions, Amanda received numerous awards, including the 2020 Inspiration Award from the Michigan Cancer Consortium, presented by Governor Whitmer.13 Her work with the Michigan Ovarian Cancer Alliance (MIOCA) as a Survivors Teaching Students (STS) speaker was part of her broader efforts to educate future healthcare professionals about ovarian cancer.45
