As a People Leader, I've seen firsthand how "busywork" can stifle creativity and engagement in People Teams, and how it reinforces the external perception that people teams are purely operational and bureaucratic (something I HATE and fight for daily!). It is our responsibility demonstrate the ROI of our teams, motivate our employees, and change the perception of the people function for execs and employees alike.
We need to ensure that our organization understands the value of the people function outside of reactive/daily work and the benefits of strategic and innovative project based work. At Shiftmove we did this by:
- Auditing our team, understanding the steps and time it takes to do something and the urgency of the requests
- Automating and creating robust processes to liberate time for project based work, especially in people operations
- Performing retros to automate work that seems unable to be automated, e.g. people issues and conflict. If you look deeply, there are patterns there that can make getting to mediations and solutions faster.
- Removing the “emergency room” feeling. Everyone wants their requests done immediately, but things take time, educating stakeholders on the time it takes and building trust that things will be done well and as soon as possible.
- Educating execs and the whole organization on the value the People Team bring to the company. Making sure we understand our business and how the work we do impacts our bottom line.
