Bridget Boakye is a woman on a mission, seeking to promote an open, inclusive, and equitable internet through her work in internet policy. She began her career as a math teacher in New York City before pivoting to business in Ghana, where she worked for several innovative startups in the media-tech and shipping-tech industries. Bridget has also worked for the Jack-Ma Foundation and consulted on strategy and content for the first independent Ghanaian oil company. She is a trained data scientist with a passion for public service, and she is currently the Policy Lead for Africa at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change. Bridget holds an MBA/Master of Public Administration Candidate, a pre-MBA leadership program from Yale University, and a degree in Economics and Education from Swarthmore College. In her spare time, Bridget enjoys reading, writing, adventure travel, and learning.

This #InternationalWomensDay, I'm honoured to join other incredible women at Tony Blair Institute for Global Change to celebrate the contributions of women to technology and the sciences.
I wrote about Hon. Neema K. Lugangira, a Tanzanian MP and chair of the African Parliamentary Network on Internet Governance, who champions the inclusion of African voices in AI policy in global fora such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence. African innovators such as Nextwear Technologies founder Kemisola Bolarinwa, who developed the “Smart Bra” to help make cancer detection more accessible for African women, and Khadija Iddrisu, a Ghanaian PhD student who developed an AI model for brain-disease detection as part of her research.
Gender diversity, from entry-level to leadership, is proven to promote better innovation, progressive thinking and effective decision-making. To avoid replicating existing inequalities and continue advances towards inclusivity, women must be at the heart of 21st-century technology transformation.
