Highlights
Festivals beat conferences - https://t.co/bC15u8iSxu ftw
That was fast - we've already sold half the tickets for 🔥THE HEAT, our VOYAGERS.io climate-tech festival near Oxford on September 20 (THEHEAT.io), and it's an amazing crowd of people ambitiously working to decarbonise. 🔥THE HEAT is a festival rather than a conference, so we're busy designing joyful experiences that build authentic connections between the 400+ participants. Everything from future-food tasting to direct-air capture in a field, with music performances, a film festival, startup pitch contest, art commissions, food-foraging, a participant-led "unconference"... with no panels, but a few must-hear 10-minute talks.
🔥THE HEAT takes place at the extraordinary Harwell Science and Innovation Campus, 1hr west of London, home to 7,500 scientists and innovators, with its own particle accelerator and European Space Agency satellite-building. When I ran WIRED, my favourite part of the job was programming 25 of our high-quality events. But I never got to organise a festival, with all the magical in-the-moment interactions that happen when you mix science + creativity + just the right changemakers.
We’ve already registered founders of ambitious climate-tech companies such as Hoxton Farms, Thaleron, one • fıve, Carbo Culture, Regrow Ag and Formo; investors from Pale blue dot, Zero Carbon Capital, Hedosophia, Manta Ray Ventures, Extantia, Third Derivative, Systemiq Capital, KOMPAS VC, Contrarian Ventures and Kiko Ventures; national and international media, and writers such as the FT's Simon Mundy; and ecosystem partners such as Innovate UK, EIT InnoEnergy and the European Innovation Council; and many more. Quite an international crowd so far.
We're designing 🔥THE HEAT to be the opposite of a conference — tapping into the talent in the VOYAGERS community to create a hands-on, practical, mind-expanding, friendship-building, exploratory, curiosity-led, science-based, creative, artistic, participatory, decentralised, experimental, edgy, risky, urgent and unpredictable gathering.
If you can make it on September 20, join us to make new friends, experience science in action, learn and share your knowledge, inspire and be inspired. Bring your most engaged and curious festival mindset. More at THEHEAT.io (NB early-bird tickets end on June 5). And if you're working in climate-tech, message me for a discount code.
Couldn't do this without our amazing partners Harwell Science and Innovation Campus, EIT InnoEnergy, KOMPAS VC, Contrarian Ventures, Extantia, Third Derivative; our ecosystem supporters Innovate UK, Oxfordshire Greentech, Climate Tech Supercluster, Oxfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership (OxLEP), ZERO Founders Network - University of Oxford; our creative friends at Felicidad, devy digital, the Gilded Acorn bookshop; our gifted curators Nathalie Nahai, Leonora Chance, Daniel Skavén Ruben, Tristan Copley Smith, Ksenia Starikova, Emma Southwell-Sander; and of course Mariana Mela Martins and Hugo Paquin. Thank you.
